Scientist speaking at a public event

Since its founding, the Union of Concerned Scientists has been a leader in how issues in science and technology are communicated. We’ve worked with tens of thousands of researchers and academics—from engineers to economists to biologists—to help them make their research more accessible to lay audiences. Our communication experts have partnered with leading universities, scientific societies, and nonprofit groups to conduct workshops on a range of topics, including:

  • Media interviews
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Public speaking
  • Report writing
  • Communications strategies
  • Social media and blogging
  • Message research and development

UCS’s book, “A Scientist’s Guide to Talking with the Media” (Rutgers University Press), shows scientists how they can reach a broader audience while remaining both accurate and effective. Nobel laureate Leon Lederman said the book is “essential medicine for the pandemic of scientific illiteracy.” The journal Science lauded the book as “superbly organized and well-written.” And Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist Deborah Blum called it an “invaluable guide for scientists.”

Members of the UCS Science Network work closely with our issue and communications staff to inject their expertise into important policy discussions and public debate.
